History
In 1880, E.S. Lyon and his wife Adeline moved to what would become the town of Lyons, Colorado. Lyon purchased 160 acres of land, noting the potential opportunities to mine the abundant red sandstone in the area. Although he was not successful in his business venture and moved to California a few years later, the sandstone quarries would become Lyons’ main export. The Denver, Utah and Pacific Railroad built a narrow-gauge track to the town in 1884, allowing easier, more accessible transportation options for the miners. Lyons’ beautiful red sandstone was shipped all over the country, including Chicago and New York before the invention of cement decimated the industry in 1910. The demand for sandstone grew again in the 1930’s when it’s value for decorative purposes increased.
Today Lyons’ sandstone industry is booming and ships worldwide. With its intersecting highways 7 and 36, it’s often called “The Double Gateway to the Rockies”. Its close proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, coupled with its small-town atmosphere and popular local events, makes Lyons a great place to live and work.
